Since this is strictly related to this board, I'm posting it here. The topic is "why is there no discussion allowed about anyone's kids?" (Just got asked this offline.)
In the far-off distant past I was the moderator of a figure-skating board. Being much younger and more innocent, I did not know what I was in for.
One of the surprises was skating mommies determined to take over the board for the sole discussion of their own children's careers. Next thing I knew I had competing pictures of cute little tykes in skating dresses, brandishing trophies. Famous coaches' names were dropped all over the place, and competitions, testing sessions, and mean judges were discussed in lengthy detail. Some of the mommies seemed to be competing to see who spent the most hours in a day sitting in cold ice rinks while their children took lessons and practiced.
There was also a big problem with mommies expecting all their kids' technical questions to be answered and their career woes to be solved.
When I tried to ban this kind of discussion (since it was taking over the board and also because public discussion of children seems unwise to me in this day and age), I got into MAJOR trouble with the mommies, who seemed to think I was violating their freedom of speech and doing terrible things to their children.
Given the incredible competition, particularly among girls, to get into the "better" ballet schools and companies, I already see the possibility of a bunch of ballet mommies descending on this board. So that's why I am banning discussion of children.
If you have a talented ballet child who you are determined to promote, you'll have to do it on your own website. I see where at least one little girl has actually started her own website and YouTube channel. Those are other possibilities.
Again, this ban includes kids under 17. Dancers 17 and older fall under the "no relatives" rule on this board -- that is, if someone says something about your ballerina/danseur relative that you do not like, you don't get to take over the board arguing with us and bemoaning your relative's hurt feelings.
Thanks for your cooperation.
